Professor Zakir Hossain Raju


Zakir Hossain Raju obtained PhD in Cinema Studies from La Trobe University, Melbourne in 2005. He earned BA (Hons) and MA in Mass Communication and Journalism from University of Dhaka respectively in 1992 and 1995. Dr Raju is engaged in university-level teaching since 1997. He taught at La Trobe University in Australia and University of Dhaka during 1997-99. He joined Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) as Assistant Professor in 2000 where he became Associate Professor in 2006. He has also taught at Monash University campuses in Malaysia and Australia for five years. During 2008-2010, as Postgraduate Course Coordinator at School of Arts and Social Sciences at Monash University Kuala Lumpur, he developed and supervised Master’s programs in Communication, and Cultural Studies. Dr Raju served as a Visiting Scholar at Australian National University, Canberra in 1999 and as an ASIA Fellow (with a grant from the Ford Foundation) at University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in 2007. A recipient of awards, grants and fellowships from a host of institutions (e.g. University of Essex, Japan Foundation, Threshold Foundation, Transparency International, La Trobe University, University of Dhaka etc.), Zakir Hossain Raju published widely. He is the author of Bangladesh Cinema and National Identity: In Search of the Modern? (Routledge, forthcoming). Dr Raju published his research on Asian media in anthologies including From Bombay to LA: The Travels of South Asian Cinema (Oxford University Press, forthcoming), Communalism and Globalization in South Asia and its Diaspora (Routledge, 2010), Media Consumption and Everyday Life in Asia (Routlege, 2009), Madrasas in South Asia: Teaching Terror? (Routledge, 2008), Contemporary Asian Cinema (Berg, 2006) and Being and Becoming: The Cinemas of Asia (Macmillan, 2002). He has also published research papers in a range of international journals including Comparative Studies in South Asia, Africa and the Middle East--CSSAAME (USA), Screening the Past (Australia), Journal of Chinese Cinemas (UK), Arts Criticism (China), Cinemaya (India), and South Asian Journal (Pakistan) as well as in Jogajog and Jamini published from Dhaka. He is a reviewer for Asian Journal of Communication (London/Singapore) and a member of the editorial board for two journals: Bioscope: South Asian Screen Studies (Sage) and Journal of South Asian Film and Media (Intellect). A filmmaker and critic of international repute, Dr Raju served as member of the Jury at Vesoul International Film Festival (France) in 2008 and at Melbourne International Film Festival during 1996-98.
